RARE NGC EF45 1865-S NORMAL DATE $10.00
The 1865-S Normal Date is by far the scarcer of the two varieties known for this issue but is counterpart—the 1865-S Inverted Date—gets more attention due to its spectacular appearance. The Normal Date is, in fact, the second rarest San Francisco eagle of any design, trailing just the very rare 1864-S.
This is a solid coin for the grade and it is housed in an older NGC holder. Both sides show light sunflower-gold toning over a russet base and there are no marks of note. As on every known 1865-S Normal Date $10, the feathers on the eagle’s neck are weakly impressed
Since 2011, just three examples in EF45 have sold, and all were graded by PCGS; the most recent trade was for $28,800 in March 2023.
