With an estimated three dozen known in all AU grades, the 1852-O is an unquestioned condition scarcity. This date becomes very rare in the higher AU grades and it is a extreme rarity in Uncirculated with only three known.
This is a fully original and very wholesome example with natural russet color seen over nominally abrades surfaces. Virtually every known 1852-O eagle in the AU50 to AU53 range has been stripped and/or is characterized by excessive abrasions. This fresh-to-the-market example represents extremely high quality for the date and grade.
In March 2023, a PCGS/CAC AU53 sold inexplicably cheaply at $7,200 in a Stack’s Bowers auction. In August 2023, a PCGS/CAC EF45 brought $7,200’ while a PCGS/CAC AU55 realized $16,800 in August 2022. Each of these was an ex Fairmont coin.
A nice example of this scarce issue and good value at this price point.
CAC has approved four in AU53 with five finer.
