RARE AND UNDERVALUED UNCIRCULATED 1866-S QUARTER EAGLE

1866 is a numismatically significant year as the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to all United States coins large enough for it to be contained. This means the quarter eagle has only one variety and this tends to lessen the impact of this issue when compared to its larger counterparts.

The 1866-S quarter eagle is an overlooked issue which is fairly available in lower grades but which is extremely rare in Uncirculated. I am aware of just three or four in Uncirculated, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS62 which brought $16,450 in the Heritage 2014 sale.

The present example is the only Uncirculated 1866-S quarter eagle I have ever offered for sale. It is strictly "new" with good luster and choice surfaces below very attractive apricot-gold color. A tiny die break between stars two and three is seen on many higher grade pieces; a few small ticks in the left obverse field barely limit the grade.

An NGC MS61 (now in a PCGS MS62 holder) brought $8,338 all the way back in January 2005.

Here is an opportunity to own a Condition Census example of this popular date.

CAC has approved just this one coin in Uncirculated.

Ex Heritage 2015 ANA: 6052 where it went reasonably at $7,050.
