CHOICE AU58 PCGS/CAC C. BECHTLER GOLD DOLLAR
K-1. R-4. 30 grains, Reeded Edge.
Struck ca. 1831, and a historically significant issue as this is the very first gold dollar struck and used in the US.
This coin shows only the slightest amount of wear on the high spots and there is luster clearly seen below natural green-gold color which changes to light rose-gold at the borders. There is a natural crack in the planchet to the left of the top of the left serif of the H in RUTHERF, and a smaller one at the left of the F in this word neither of which impacts the overall appeal.
Struck from wildly rotated dies as often seen.
Heritage sold a PCGS/CAC AU58+ for $14,400 in 11/2023, which was comparable to this coin, while two NGC AU58s with CAC stickers brought $15,500 in 9/2024 and $22,800 in 11/2023.
If you collect gold dollars, this historic issue is essential to the completeness of your set.
CAC has approved eight in AU58 with eight finer.
