IMPORTANT NGC MS62 1859-D $2.50, TIED FOR HIGHEST GRADED
In addition to being a numismatically significant issue as the ultimate of 20 quarter eagles from Dahlonega, the low mintage 1859-D (just 2,244 were made) is a really rare issue in Uncirculated. I am aware of around six to eight, all in the MS60 to MS62 range. The single finest, now in the DL Hansen Collection, brought a stunning $132,000 in its 2022 appearance as Stack’s Bowers ANA: 6067.
This coin is totally fresh to the market.I purchased it from a New England dealer who had recently purchased it from a Southern collector as part of a deal. I had dollar signs in my eyes as I contemplated it crossing to PCGS and then stickering at CAC. As it sometimes happens, these experts disagreed with me. I still think this is the second or third best 1859-D I’ve ever handled. It is frosty, free of rub, and it shows natural medium honey-gold color over lightly marked surfaces.
In 11/2024, Heritage sold a PCGS MS62 1859-D quarter eagle for $40,800, and I like mine a whole lot more!
If you are working on a serious set of Dahlonega quarter eagles, rest assured that you will never see a significantly nicer coin than this!
