PCGS MS61 1853-D HALF EAGLE, ex Fairmont

Large D mintmark.

The 1853-D is one of the most available Dahlonega half eagles. However, few examples of this—or any—D mint half eagles shows the excellent eye appeal as seen on this outstanding example. The yellow-gold color is vivid while there is ample frost. Unlike many 1853-D half eagles, this piece is well-struck at the borders with full denticles seen on both sides.

Until this coin became available (see below), no PCGS MS61 1853-D half eagle had sold at public auction since late 2017.

To my eyes, this is a very choice coin for the grade and I’d suggest that the new owner re-send it to CAC as it has a decent chance of stickering the second time around.
