PCGS/CAC MS63 1806 ROUND 6 HALF EAGLE
BD-6, R-2. Round 6.
The 1806 half eagle is found with a Pointed 6 and a Round 6. The latter is far more available and it is actually one of the few half eagles of this type which is reasonably easy to locate even in the MS62 to MS63 range. Most examples graded MS63 are not choice and even fewer are worthy of approval by CAC.
This is a textbook MS63 with exceptional mint frost beneath rich totally natural reddish and orange-gold colors on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is slightly soft at the obverse center and many of the obverse stars at the right do not show radial lines; the reverse is crisply defined. There are a few shallow scuffs on the obverse while the reverse is essentially Gem quality on its own.
The two most recent APR's for this issue in PCGS/CAC MS63 are $30,550 (Heritage 2016 ANA: 4283) and $31,725 (Heritage 9/13: 6758).
A slightly finer example--if available--would cost in excess of $50,000. For most type collectors, this 1806 Round 6 is the perfect choice to represent this design in their high-end set.
CAC has approved 15 in this grade with 21 finer.
