POPULAR CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1861 THREE DOLLAR.

Only 6,702 business strikes were made and this date tends to come in circulated grades, indicating it saw use in commerce. While many have been slabbed in the various AU grades, only a small percentage are choice and original and this is indicated by the low rate of CAC approval.

This coin is uncommonly nice for the grade with fully original medium to deep russet hues seen on the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are immaculate and retain a sense of freshness not often seen on three dollar gold pieces from the Civil War era.

The last PCGS AU50 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which realized $2,990 as Stacks Bowers 3/11: 6461.

An affordable piece which should fit comfortably into a nice collection of Civil War era gold coinage.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 20 finer.
