After the discovery of many examples on the SS Central America, the 1856-S double eagle is among the more common Type One double eagles.
This example is clearly not from the shipwreck as it has naturally lustrous surfaces which are covered with pleasing medium russet hues. The fields are very clean with just a few light nicks seen with the naked eye.
A non-CAC NGC AU55 example sold for $3,525 as Heritage 4/14: 6766 while a non-CAC PCGS AU55 brought $3,819 as Heritage 3/14: 10697.
A well above average coin for the grade and a nice 1856-S for the Type One collector on a budget.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 19 finer.
