VIRTUALLY PERFECT 1927 ST. GAUDENS DOUBLE EAGLE

There are hundreds of thousands of 1927 double eagles known but only a tiny fraction approach the threshold of perfection. This is evidenced by the fact that of the 150,947 graded by PCGS as of January 2017, just 21 (or 0.01%) have graded MS67 or MS67+. Another 144 have so far graded MS66+.

This immaculate Gem has superb natural color and thick, frosty luster with just a few tiny abrasions seen on the surfaces. I’ve seen examples in NGC MS67 holders which weren’t as clean and wholesome as this exceptional example.

The last CAC approved 1927 double eagle graded MS66+ by PCGS to sell at auction realized $4,700 as Heritage 8/14: 4363.

At a fraction of the cost of an MS67, this seems like great value for the collector who wants a blow-you-out-of-the-water common date Saint for his type set.

CAC has approved 484 in MS66 but only a small fraction of these grade MS66+; four have been approved in grades above MS66+.
