IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS 1882-CC $20, PCGS/CAC MS62, ex Bender Collection
There are precious few pedigrees which guarantee that if a coin is from this source, it is going to be at the very lest, choice and above-average for the date and grade. Among collections sold within the last decade, the Tom Bender provenance is one of the few on this very short list.
As a date, the 1882-CC is decidedly scarcer than the 1883-CC and the 1884-CC double eagles. It is very scarce in strong MS62 and exceedingly rare in MS63 or better with a current PCGS population of just four. To the best of my knowledge there were around six different PCGS MS62 1882-CC double eagles in Fairmont, with the most recent APR at $26,400 (SB 2024 ANA: 2205) and one before this at $40,800 (SB 5/2023: 5342). In their 4/2022 sale, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC for an incredible $156,000.
I sold this exact coin to Tom Bender in 2018, and it took me close to five years to procure an 1882-CC $20 that met his exacting standards. This coin is exactly what you should be looking for in any MS62 CC double eagle with 100% natural golden-orange color over lightly abraded surfaces.
As my grandmother always used to say: “If its good enough for Tom Bender, its good enough for you...”
Ex Heritage 2022 ANA: 3639 where it sold for $33,600.
CAC has approved seven in MS62 with just two finer (both in PCGS MS63).
