The 1854 Small Date double eagle falls neatly between the 1850-1853 and 1855-1858 dates in terms of overall scarcity.
This coin looks more like an AU55 than an AU53 in my opinion. This is due to a good amount of luster clearly seen beneath the nice russet and lighter orange-gold hues which cover both sides.
A nice, inexpensive Type One double eagle.
CAC has approved 25 in this grade with 64 finer.
