CONDITION CENSUS NGC MS64 1842-O QUARTER EAGLE
In higher grades, the 1842-O is the second rarest quarter eagle from New Orleans trailing only the 1845-O. There are an estimated seven to nine known in MS60 or better with nearly all in the MS61 to MS62 range. The present coin is either the finest or the second finest known.
This coin is housed in an older holder and it has absolutely screaming luster; the best luster, in fact, that I have ever seen on this date. There are a number of small handling marks including a thin, shallow and fairly fresh scratch arcing from Liberty’s chin down to the area in front of the date. Despite some cracks and rust on the reverse at AMERICA, the strike is amazing for the date.
Only one other 1842-O quarter eagle has ever been graded higher than MS62—a PCGS MS64. Comparing that coin to mine, the other appears more original but far less frosty and it lacks the huge planchet flaw on the obverse which was caused by a foreign object adhering to the dies during the striking process.
This coin has really grown on me. I would strongly suggest to the new owner that you reholder it at NGC then try to cross it to PCGS.
