A CHOICE CONDITION CENSUS 1858 $20, Ex New England Collection

The fate of this coin was sealed when I purchased a PCGS/CAC MS63—I paid $60,000 for Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5382. In retrospect, I probably paid too much for it, but my client felt the price paid was fine. And here I find myself over three years later selling what I believe is the single most aesthetically pleasing 1858-P $20 in existence.

What makes this coin special is its intense natural orange-gold color. I’m very good at determining what color(s) on gold coins are real and what color(s) is the product of an induced chemical reaction. I’m 100% certain that this color is 100% genuine, and will go to the mat for you if it is ever questioned. I like this coin enough that I walked it though PCGS recently (at the 2026 FUN show to be exact) in an attempt to get it to grade MS62+. Some scattered scuffs cab be seen below stars four through seven on the obverse and a tiny mint-made planchet chip to the right of the second 8 in the date.

This exact coin (see below) and the aforementioned PCGS MS63 are the lone CAC stickered MS62 and finer examples of this date which have auction data.

CAC has approved just two in MS63 with just a single coin better (CACG 64+).

Ex New England Collection via Douglas Winter Numismatics; Heritage 2013 ANA: 5903 where I paid a record-setting (at the time) $38,188.
