CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS MS64+ 1924-S ST. GAUDENS $20
At one point, this date was—along with the 1926-D—considered to be the two rarest dates of the entire design type; even rarer than the 1921 and the 1927-D. The 1924-S became considerably more available by the late 1960’s/early 1970’s and today it is a scarce date in Uncirculated but certainly not a rarity; at least until you get up to the MS65 level where it is a six figure item. There is one superb Gem graded MS67 by PCGS that sold for $930,000 in the Heritage 2022 ANA auction.
This piece sports natural yellow-gold ad rose color which I find very attractive. The luster is excellent as is the strike. A few very small marks in the fields and on the feathers remove this from consideration at the Gem level but this outstanding coin is close to being a Gem with a potential $100,000+++ price tag.
To my way of thinking, there are two types of 1924-S Saint I’d want for my personal collection. I would either want a high end PCGS/CAC MS65+ to MS66 coin (good luck finding one as the current population of CAC Gem 1924-S double eagles is…zero!) or a nice borderline Gem such as this PCGS MS64+ at a fraction of the price.
PCGS has graded 35 in MS64+ (this seems WAY inflated by resubmissions) with just nine better and the PCGS Price Guide is $42,500 for this date in MS64+.
There are five APR’s for this date in PCGS MS64+ since 2021 with the low at $33,600 (8/2024) and the high at $42,000 (12/2022).
A choice and very sensible 1924-S for the sophisticated specialist.
