SCARCE PCGS AU55 1859 $20
The 1859 is the second scarcest Type One $20 from the Philadelphia mint after the 1862. Unlike its rivals the 1863 and the 1864, there are no shipwrecks or ground hoards of 1859-P double eagles. And this date wasn’t overwhelmed by Fairmont coins as there were just two high(er) quality pieces sold: a PCGS AU55 and an amazing PCGS/CAC MS62 which was purchased by DWN for $72,000.
This piece has a nice overall appearance for the date and grade with rich natural golden-russet color. A good deal of luster is present while the wear on the coin is limited to the high spots. A patch of bagmarks can be seen in the lower right obverse while a thin mint-made streak runs fro the back loop of the 9 in the date.
The most recent APR for an AU55 is Heritage 7/2026: 3238 which was a low-end NGC coin that brought an appropriately low $9,760. As recently as 2022-2023, this was a $15,000-18,000 coin in PCGS AU55. At its current price point, the 1859 $20 in this grade represents excellent value
