HIGH CONDITION CENSUS PCGS MS62 1868 $20.00
The 1868 is the single scarcest P mint Type Two Liberty Head double eagle. The single best one in Fairmont was a PCGS/CAC that brought $27,600 as Stacks Bowers 4/2022: 5408. The present example is clearly finer as it lacks the dense dings seen in the left obverse field of that specific example.
I have handled nearly every single MS60 or finer 1868 $20 and the only one I felt was decidedly finer was the NGC MS63 (now crossed to a PCGS 633) that sold for $59,800 back in May 2007.
This fresh-to-the market example shows exceptional rose-gold and orange hues over very frosty, totally unadulterated surfaces. There a few shallow scuffs on both the obverse and the reverse but the coin is choice overall. Heritage 2026 FUN; 3322 brought $35,380 and it showed a noticeable deep cut on Liberty’s throat while the PCGS MS62 which was offered as Lot 3492 in the Heritage 2025 ANA was liney.
To the best of my knowledge, this is among the three or four finest 1868 double eagles which exist and it is the single nicest one I have ever offered for sale.
