The 1872-CC is the second scarcest of six Type Two Carson City double eagles, trailing only the rare 1870-CC and the tough 1871-CC. In the lowest Uncirculated grades, this is a six-figure coin, and only one PCGS MS60 (at $102,000) and one PCGS MS61(also at $102,000) have been available via auction in the last decade+.
This is an unusual coin for the date and grade, as many of the AU58 1872-CC double eagles that I’ve seen over the years have been less than original. This piece, which sports natural medium lime-gold color with some orange shades at the central reverse, is lustrous and shows only the slightest wear, limited to the obverse high spots.
The three most recent APRs for this date in PCGS AU58 are all for CAC approved coins, and are for $43,200 (8/2022), $34,800 (8/2022) and $60,000 (4/2022).
