RARE AND VERY UNDERRATED PCGS/CAC MS61 1860 $10; A CONDITION CENSUS EXAMPLE, ex Fairmont
The combination of a low mintage (only 15, 105 business strikes) and heavy meltings during the Civil War combined to make the 1860-P a scarce date in any grade. It is mostly seen in EF40 to AU55, with AU58 coins being somewhat challenging to locate. My best estimate is that around 10 or so are known in Unciruclated grades with a pair of PCGS MS64 coins—both ex Harry Bass—being the best of these.
Nearly all of the MS60 and MS61 1860 eagles are horribly abraded and this example does show a fair number including a reeding mark in front of Liberty’s mouth and a cluster of shallow marks before star twelve. This coin is totally original with no signs of having been lightened.
This is the single finest 1860 $10 from Fairmont, and it is one of three PCGS/CAC MS61 examples to have ever sold.
An important coin for the advanced collector of Liberty Head eagles.
CAC has approved just three in MS61 with none finer.
