SCARCE NGC AU53 1855-O $10

The 1855-O remains among the rarest of the 21 different No Motto eagles from New Orleans. It is hard to locate even in EF grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces. Properly graded AU53 to AU55 examples are extremely scarce, and I am aware of just three or four nice AU58s. A pair of PCGS MS61s in the Tyrant Collection represent the whole population of Uncirculated 1855-O eagles, and the last auction trade for this date in any MS grade was in 2004.

While I think NGC got carried away with the grade of this coin, I bought it any way because of its totally natural deep russet color that blankets surfaces with a typical number of scattered abrasions.

No NGC AU53 1855-O $10 has sold at auction since 2020. Two Fairmont PCGS AU53s were sold by Stack’s Bowers at auction, with a coin in June 2024 selling cheaply at $8,100 due to a detracting cut at the central obverse, while a nice CAC approved coin brought a strong $16,800 in April 2022. In their 2023 ANA auction, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU50 for $12,000.

A pleasing example of a scarce and popular issue.
