THE SOLE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU53 1849-O EAGLE
In higher grades, the 1849-O is the second scarcest eagle produced in the 1840s from New Orleans. It is extremely scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, and rare in AU58. Uncirculated examples are incredibly rare with only three or so known and none finer than MS61.
This is an absolutely exceptional piece with strong claims to an AU55 grade. The obverse shows delightful reddish-orange hues across most of the surface area while the reverse shows similar hues mostly at the peripheries. As on every known 1849-O $10, the obverse shows weakness on the stars and at the curls blow LIBERTY; the reverse shows better detail. A fine shallow diagonal scrape can be seen behind the bun and there is an inconsequential rim mark at 6:00 on the reverse. I can’t recall having seen a nicer 1849-O $10 in this grade!
No PCGS/CAC AU53 has ever sold at auction. In August 2022, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU55 for $14,400. That coin was more lustrous than mine but it was significantly more scuffed on the obverse and the reverse. In the last decade+, only two non-CAC 1849-O eagles have sold at auction with the more recent occurring in 11/2020.
I doubt you will see a finer 1849-O $10 than this priced under $10,000.
CAC has approved this single piece in AU53 with just four finer.
