CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU55 1848-O $10.00
The 1848-O is more available than the the 1845-O and 1847-O eagles, but it is easier to locate in all grades than the 1846-O and the 1849-O. There are as many as 12-14 known in Uncirculated. This date is almost always found with very baggy surfaces and the strike always shows significant weakness on the stars.
This is among the best AU55 1848-O eagles that I have ever offered for sale. It is virgin original with untouched surfaces; some reddish peripheral on the obverse add to the overall eye appeal. The coin is not from a bank hoard and as a result lacks the dirt and crust seen on the Fairmont coins. However, the eye appeal is very high for the date and grade.
No CAC approved PCGS AU55 examples have ever sold at auction. In March 2023, Stack’s Bowers sold a nice coin from the Fairmont Hoard in PCGS/CAC AU53 for $6,600. Remarkably, there has been just one sale of a non-CAC 1848-O $10 in AU55 since 2010 and this was for $6,300 in 11/2022.
If you can even locate a CAC approved PCGS AU58, it will likely run you $12,500+ making this lovely AU55 a great value for the savvy specialist.
CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 14 finer.
