SUPERB GEM PCGS MS66+ 1864 GOLD DOLLAR

As with the 1863 and 1865 gold dollars, the 1864 has an odd pattern of grade distribution with survivors tending to cluster in the EF45-AU55 and MS66-MS67+ ranges. Many of the 5,900 which were originally made were melted, yet as many as 10 superb Gems exist including a PCGS MS68+ and a 69 (!) as well.

This piece is outstanding and I resubmitted it in the hopes of it grading MS67 at PCGS. It shows some heavy mint-made die striations in the obverse fields which is very common for the issue, while there are raised die rust markings on the Native American’s face which appear like a bad case of Acne. A tiny mint-made spot at the chin is mentioned for accuracy.

No PCGS MS66+ 1864 gold dollar has ever sold at auction. Since 2003, there are just four APRs for a PCGS MS67, with none recorded since late 2018.

If you are working on a Civil War set of US coinage, this could very well be the 1864 gold dollar that you’ve been waiting for.
