SCARCE AND POPULAR 1864 GOLD DOLLAR GRADED MS63 BY NGC
As a date, the 1864 gold dollar is many times scarcer than the high mintage 1861 and 1862 issues, but is less rare than the 1863 (by far the toughest of the five Civil War issue gold dollars), and a bit less challenging than the 1865. As with the 1863 and the 1865, this date is typically seen either sort-of-nice (mid-range AU) to holy-crap-how-does-this-exist nice (MS65 to MS68) which leaves very few coins in the middle ground sweet-spot.
This is an attractive coin overall with natural light yellow-gold color over somewhat soft luster, as is common for this date. There is a small mark on the jawline of Liberty and a short line on the reverse which begins at the right loop of the 6 and extends up through the left side of the A in DOLLAR. But these are not out of line for the assigned grade, and this is actually among the nicer 1864 gold dollars which I have offered for sale in the past few years.
Since early 2008, there has been just a single MS63 1864 offered for sale; it brought $10,200 in 7/2022 and was graded by PCGS. Just a single MS64 has sold since 2013 and it was offered in an obscure Midwestern auction.
As the auction data proves, you’ll have a hard time finding a nicer 1864 gold dollar unless you want to move up to the big leagues and pursue a mega-grade example.
