VERY RARE PROOF 1877 GOLD DOLLAR
Of all the Proof Type Three gold dollars, the 1877 is tied with the 1874 and the 1875 for the lowest reported mintage (the 1856-1858 issues likely are as low or even lower). Only 20 were made, and based on personal experience, I feel that an estimated 12-14 are known which seems like an unusually high percentage for any Proof gold coin dated 1877.
This coin is way undergraded in my opinion, and I think it is far nicer than the PCGS PR63 DCAM that Heritage sold in the 2022 ANA auction for $9,300. It is also interesting to compare this coin to the PCGS PR62 CAM sold by Heritage in their 11/2018 auction, as the present example is clearly a point-and-a-half finer; if not a full two points.
It is interesting to note that since the sale of an NGC Gem Proof 1877 gold dollar in late 2018, only four Proofs of this date have been auctioned with one in a Details holder, one graded PR62 CAM by PCGS, and another in PR63CAM.
While I make no guarantees that it will upgrade, I would strongly recommend that the new owner of this coin send it into PCGS for a resubmission.
CAC has approved this one coin in PR62 DCAM with five finer. Just six have been approved with the DCAM designation. For all designations, CAC has approved eight in all grades with two in PR62 and six finer.
