GEM PCGS/CAC MS66 1859 GOLD DOLLAR
While not as difficult to locate in Gem as the wildly overlooked 1860, the 1859 gold dollar compares favorably to the more expensive Civil War dates in Gem to Superb Gem grades. The single finest known—the amazing PCGS/CAC MS68+ Simpson/Duckor/Akers coin—brought a strong $60,000 in its last auction appearance (1/2022).
This frosty Gem has a superb obverse with the natural rich green-gold and rose hues that this date is known for while the reverse shows some mint-made granularity in the left center. This is shallow, and it does not affect the sharpness of the date numerals or the DOLL in DOLLAR.
Legend Auctions sold a PCGS/CAC MS66 1859 gold dollar for $4,935 in May 2021.
CAC has approved eight in MS66 and MS66+ with five finer.
