CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS/CAC MS64 1901-O $10.00
As with its counterpart, the 1903-O, the 1901-O $10 is an extreme rarity in Gem. The current PCGS population for Gems is exactly one coin: an MS66—ex Eliasberg—that was last sold via auction in 1989.
This is a very high end example for the grade and it represents essentially the finest available quality for a 20th century New Orleans eagle. The coin has a “Gemmy” appearance with thick, mint frost with appealing natural rich orange-gold hues atop very slightly scuffed surfaces. The typical 1901-O eagle is baggy and unappealing and this is a welcome exception to this rule.
Stacks Bowers 9/2026: 5442 brought $8,540 and it lacked CAC approval while the same firm sold a non-CAC PCGS MS64 in the same sale for $10,370. A PCGS/CAC MS64+ sold for $9,000 back in early 2020.
With Gems essentially unavailable, this nice MS64 is likely the finest available example of this popular date.
CAC has approved six in MS64 with none finer.
