SCARCE 1856-O $10 IN PCGS AU55

Despite the presence of seven nice 1856-O eagles in the Fairmont Hoard—including two in AU55 and one each in AU55+ and AU58, this date remains scarce and popular in any AU grade. In MS60 and finer, the 1856-O is a great rarity with only three known: an NGC MS60, a PCGS MS60 and an NGC/CAC MS60.

I was mildly flabbergasted by this coin’s failure to impress the CAC graders as I regard it as a solid “B+” example with great color and a ton of luster for the grade. What CAC typically fails to recognize is while this coin might not be as nice as, say an 1845-O $10 graded AU55 by PCGS, it is considerably nicer than your run-of-the-mill AU55 1856-O; a date that inevitably comes scuffy and unoriginal.

The two PCGS/CAC AU55 1856-O from Fairmont brought $10,800 and $11,400 in 2022 respectively and both sold cheaply, in my opinion. A scuffy but decent non-CAC PCGS AU55 sold for $9,000 in July 2022.

A very nice example of a scarce and still-undervalued issue.
