RARE PCGS EF45 1865-S NORMAL DATE $10.00
Varieties of 1865-S exist with a normal date as well as a spectacular inverted date. Most people assume its the flashy Inverted Date that is the rarer of the two, but this is not the case. Until the Fairmont and Kunker coins came on the market, this issue was extremely rare in AU, and the appearance of at least three high Condition Census in a short period of time didn’t obliterate the demand for the 1865-S eagle. In fact, the single best Fairmont coin—a gorgeous PCGS/CAC AU58—set a record price for the issue at $108,000.
A bit bluntly struck as is the rule for this variety but still well-defined save for the lines in the stars which are not brought up. The color is lovely with a rich russet tone contrasted by frosty reddish-gold hues at the periphery. The small raised dot on the cheek of Liberty is mint-made and it is diagnostic to the issue.
Excluding this exact coin (see below), there have been just two PCGS EF45 1865-S Normal Date eagles sold at auction since early 2011: the Jacobson coin that brought $20,400 in early 2020, and a crappy recolored coin that brought $18,000 in the Heritage 2022 ANA.
If I were the new owner of this rare and impressive coin, I would send it back to CAC as it certainly looks sticker-able to me.
