CONDITIONALLY RARE 1869-S $10, PCGS/CAC AU58
As one would expect from a branch mint issue from this era with a low mintage of 6,430, the 1869-S is scarce in all grades, and it is rare in properly graded AU58. The current PCGS population of eight in this grade is inflated by resubmissions and I think the actual number of distinct coins known in level is more likely around four or five. There are just two 1869-S eagles in Uncirculated: the finest known, graded PCGS/CAC MS63, that brought a strong $162,000 as Heritage 2025 FUN: 4856, and the NGC MS61 that sold for $43,200 as Heritage 2/2018: 4276.
This highly lustrous example is completely original with no signs of having ever been lightened. Both sides show natural russet hues with some soft rose at the borders. A small mark is seen on the obverse directly beneath stars seven and eight. Overall, this is a wonderful slider with terrific eye appeal. It is comfortably in the middle of the Condition Census for the date, and it is the single best 1869-S which DWN has ever offered for sale.
There are two APRs for PCGS/CAC AU58 1869-S eagles. These are Heritage 2025 FUN: 5711 at $18,600, and Heritage 2/2020: 3270 at $18,000. A non-CAC example in PCGS AU58 sold for $22,200 as Heritage 10/2022: 3254. The single best example of this date in the Fairmont hoard was a PCGS/CAC AU55 that brought $18,600 in 4/2022.
CAC has approved three in AU58 with one finer (PCGS MS63).
