As far back as 1975, Dave Akers was aware of the scarcity of the 1858-S $10, writing that is was a “very rare and underrated coin in any grade.” He also noted correctly that when available, the 1858-S tended to come in low grades. Half a century later, this remains true as well.
This well-worn example shows reddish color at its borders and this offers nice contrast to the russet centers.
There is an auction record for a non-CAC PCGS VG8 which brought $2,160 in 2021, and $1,,920 in 2023.
I challenge you to locate a rarer pre-1933 US gold coin at this price point!
