SCARCE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1854 LARGE DATE $20.00

This date is less scarce than it was a decade ago as evidenced by the fact that a PCGS/CAC AU58 brought a strong $27,500 in the Stack’s Bowers 2012 ANA sale. Still, it remains rare and expensive in Uncirculated, and this makes a gem slider such as this a desirable coin.

This coin is almost certainly from an overseas bank but it was last sold in 2017, a few years prior to the discovery of the Fairmont Hoard. It shows no real wear but enough bag friction to make it a really spiffy AU58. There are a lack of detracting abrasions as on most 1854 LD $20s and the color is a rich, even golden hue.

The most recent auction sales for this variety in PCGS/CAC AU58 are Heritage 2025 ANA: 3212 at $13,200, Heritage 12/2024: 3129 at $10,208, and Heritage 9/2024: 3204 at $11,100.

CAC has approved 14 in AU58 with just 8 finer.
