When my friend Charles Morgan of Coin Week contacts me with an idea for a podcast, I’m always interested as he is one of the most gifted minds in the rare coin industry. Charles recently called me with an especially interesting idea: a Coin Battle between the celebrated 1822 half eagle and the unique 1870-S three dollar gold piece.

Charles allowed me to choose my side and without hesitating, I selected the 1822 half eagle. This coin is one of my very favorite American gold rarities and I was happy to defend its honor against Charles’ selection: the 1870-S three.
