IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS PCGS MS65 1880 $2.50

Only 2,960 business strike 1880 quarter eagles were produced, and if we examine the graded population of all the pieces seen by PCGS, we can determine that few—if any—examples saw more than brief circulation. This issue is typically seen in the AU55 to MS63 range and Gems are quite scarce with a current PCGS population of seven in MS65 and just a single coin finer—an MS66 which has never sold at auction but which is imaged on PCGS Coinfacts.

This is an absolutely outstanding Gem with glowing frosty luster under 100% natural medium orange-gold color. I thought this coin was a close to a “lock” to sticker at CAC, and it was returned to me with a Red Sticker on the holder noting a mark on the obverse that appears non-existent to me after a long search aided by a 5x loupe.

The sole APR for an 1880 quarter eagle in PCGS MS65 is Stack’s Bowers 2011 ANA: 7619 at $14,375.
