AMONG THE FINEST KNOOWN 18490O QUARTER DOLLARS
The 1849-O is among the rarest of all the Liberty Seated quarters produced from 1840 through 1860 (and again in 1891). The mintage is unknown and it is doubtful if more than 20,000 or so were made. It is typically seen in very low grades (AG3 to VF30) and it becomes very rare in AU grades. I am aware of just three Uncirculated coins, with two currently graded PCGS MS63 and one by CACG. Two are very nice (this one and the ex Eliasberg example in the 400 Esplanade Collection), while the third is dark and not appealing, in my opinion; it last sold for $31,200 as Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 3089 and it was formerly an NGC MS63+ owned by Gene Gardner.
This coin has dramatic 100% genuine iridescent color with rich vivid blues, reds and greens which deepen towards the borders. Other than some flatness on the stars at the right obverse, the detail is excellent. There are a few tiny marks at the top of the reverse but overall, this is one of the two best 1849-O quarters known to me.
High-end Seated Quarters are always in-demand, and the opportunity to buy a very high-end example of a legendary date such as this 1849-O are very infrequent.
CAC has approved just two in his grade with zero finer.
