IMPORTANT PCGS MS62 1838-D HALF EAGLE

McCloskey 1-A, Winter 1-A. R-3.

The 1838-D is likely the single most popular Classic Head half eagle. It is the first half eagle from this mint and a sought-after one year type which is rare in Uncirculated with an estimated 10-12 known, mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This frosty orange-gold example is among the better struck 1838-D half eagles I can recall seeing with nearly complete definition seen at the centers. The small clashmark at the throat is diagnostic to the issue and is not a defect. There are a few marks on either side which are consistent with the grade; the most notable is a shallow scrape below O in OF.

No PCGS MS62 has appeared at auction since this exact coin sold in 2007; see below for the provenance. The Pogue MS63 realized a very strong $94,000 in May 2016.

This is likely to be the most sought-after coin in this collection.

Ex Heritage 2007 ANA:: 1919 where it sold for $37,375.

From the Western Springs collection.
