SCARCE LOW MINTAGE 1885 IN AN OGH

Everyone likes a low mintage business strike US gold coin, and with 800 struck, mintages don’t get much lower than the 1885.

This coin is housed in an old green label holder and, in my opinion, it grades AU55+ to AU58 by today’s standards. It shows light orange-gold color and there is some luster seen on both sides. There are no notable marks on the obverse and just one small one on the revers below the eagle’s throat.

Two PCGS/CAC 1885 quarter eagles in Choice AU have sold in the last few years: this exact coin (see below) and a very slightly nicer PCGS/CAC AU58 which brought $10,281 as Legend 12/2022: 315.

This date is a bit less rare than generally acknowledged but finding an example like this with all the “bells and whistles” would be a feather in any specialized collector’s cap.

Ex Heritage 6/2021: 3627 where it sold for $9,000.

CAC has approved three in this grade with nine finer.
