The mintage figure for this issue is just 5,320 and there are likely fewer than 200 known. I believe that a small hoard existed at one time as there are around seven or eight very nice coins in the MS63 to MS64 range currently known, and these all have a similar “look.”
This piece has a hybrid surface texture which combines reflective and frosty finishes and this is seen on a number of the nicer 1871 quarter eagles.
There are four APRs for this date in PCGS/CAC MS62 and this exact coin (see below) is one of these. In August 2021, an example brought $4,950.
Ex Heritage 4/2020: 4358 where it brought $3,840.
CACA has approved three in this grade with three finer.
