This date is very similar in overall and high grade rarity to the 1868 and the 1869. Like those two dates, the 1870 is typically available in the mid-AU to high AU range, with most of these coins notable for excessive marks and blah eye appeal. There are just two nice Uncirculated coins known: a PCGS MS63 and a PCGS MS65 and neither of these have ever sold at auction.
This example is too abraded to earn a CAC sticker but it is nicer than usual for this date with good luster and pleasing medium yellow-gold color.
The only PCGS/CAC AU58 1870 quarter eagle to ever sell at auction brought $3,840 as Stack’s Bowers 3/2018: 3723.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with two finer. For the entire issue only seven business strikes have passed at CAC.
