LOW MINTAGE 1869 GRADED MS61 BY PCGS/CAC
There a total of 16 examples of this date in the MS60 to MS62 range (nine in MS61 and seven in MS62) but this includes numerous resubmissions as well as coins which could just as easily grade AU58 on a bad day.
Not so with this coin. It is very solid for the grade with undipped mellow gold surfaces with excellent luster. A few small marks in the left obverse field are visible but I like this coin a lot more than the last few MS62 coins which have sold.
This exact coin (see below) is the single PCGS/CAC MS61 to ever sell at auction, and the only better 1869 quarter eagle available in the past decade was a PCGS/CAC MS63+ which brought $21,738 in July 2022.
Ex Heritage 2018 ANA: 3703 where it brought $3,840.
CAC has approved three in this grade with six finer.
