RARE PCGS AU58 (SANS CAC) 1867
The owner of the Star City quarter eagle collection lacked a very small number of coins to be complete with his all-CAC set. One of these is a date you’ll never guess; unless you really know this series. It’s the 1867 which has exactly three coins approved by CAC which grade over AU53: single examples in AU55, MS61, and MS64.
If you are a long-time DWN customer, you are aware of my affection for the 1867 quarter eagle. Not only is it a condition rarity, it is an appearance rarity with very few known in any circulated grades which aren’t horrible.
This one is actually pretty decent for the issue. It’s very lustrous and lightly circulated but it’s pretty marky and a bit too orange-y.
You’ll likely not see a better 1867 for some time and at well under $5k, it’s a no-brainer as far as value goes.
