LOW MINTAGE 1866
There were a small number of affordable Liberty Head quarter eagles with CAC approval which eluded the Star City Collection, and the low mintage 1866 was one of them. In three+ decades of specializing in US gold, I’ve only handled a single nice circulated 1866; a PCGS/CAC AU55 which I sold around seven or eight years ago. (Note: I also sold the finest known—a PCGS MS64—many years ago).
Around 45-55 exist and around 95% of these range from awful to hideous. This one is actually pretty decent with a typical strike and the usual baggy surfaces but with nice overall color.
Despite this date’s obvious rarity, it remains exceptionally undervalued in all grades. Just four APRs in PCGS EF40 exist since 2005 along with four in EF45.
A great “hole filler” until you have to dramatically overpay for the very first 1866 quarter eagle to get approved by CAC.
