The 1863-S is very similar in overall rarity to the 1862-S but I think it is a harder issue to find nice.
This is an outstanding, truly PQ example which is strictly natural in appearance and has dirt caked in the recesses. In fact, I don’t recall having seen another 1863-S quarter eagle in EF which was as nice as this one.
This is the only 1863-S quarter in any EF grade to earn approval at CAC.
One of my favorite coins in this collection!
Ex DLRC 4/2021: 8414 where it brought $5,750
CAC has approved this coin in EF45 with just five finer.
