CONDITIONALLY SCARCE 1862/1 IN PCGS/CAC AU58
This is an important variety as it is the only confirmed overdate in the entire Liberty Head quarter eagle series. Around 55-65 exist, and higher-end AU coins are quite scarce. I am aware of six or so in Uncirculated, with the finest a PCGS/CAC MS64 which set a record for the variety when it sold for $64,624 in December 2020.
This lustrous slider is an early die state with the overdate easily visible to the naked eye.
No PCGS/CAC AU58 1862/1 has ever sold at auction, and just one non-CAC has sold: back in 2006 and again in 2007. The highest price recorded for an NGC AU58 (non-CAC) is $5,897 in March 2014.
This pleasing example has a very low CAC population and it could be years before you get another chance to own a pleasing AU58 like this. This is the only CAC 1862/1 quarter eagle in any grade which I have sold.
CAC has approved two in this grade with just two finer (MS61 and MS64).
