SCARCE PCGS/CAC 1861-S GRADED AU53

The 1861-S is likely the most available of the four Civil War quarter eagles from San Francisco but it is among the rarest in high grades. In Uncirculated grades, this issue is nearly impossible to locate with just five or so known, and nice AU coins are scarcer than their seemingly high population figures would indicate.

This yellow-gold example has the body of an AU55 to AU58 but it is a bit ticky and hence the accurate PCGS grade. A cluster of light marks in the right field is noticeable, as are a few pecks on the cheek, but the overall appeal is quite impressive for the grade.

A slightly nicer PCGS/CAC AU53 sold for $6,750 as DLRC 12/2020: 8324.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
