IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS 1860-S
An estimated dozen or so Uncirculated 1860-S quarter eagles exist, with the single finest a PCGS/CAC MS64 which sold for $25,300 in 2011. This is followed by a pair of PCGS MS63 coins (one with CAC approval), and then this coin, which is solidly in the Condition Census.
This example has just about the flashiest appearance of any 1860-S quarter I have seen and its vibrant, lustrous surfaces are covered in warm orange-gold and rose hues. There are insignificant obverse ticks scattered about the fields including two light scrapes (one on either side of the final star) but I regard this as being very solid overall for the grade.
There are four APRs for 1860-S quarter eagles in PCGS MS62 since 2013, but this includes one duplicate listing. This exact coin is the only PCGS MS62 to have CAC approval. The two PCGS MS63 coins mentioned above brought $16,100 in October 2011 and $19,500 back in March 2006.
If you are building a world-class set of Liberty Head quarter eagles, you won’t get many chances to acquire an 1860-S which is as nice as this coin.
Ex Legend 7/2021: 236 at $11,456.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer MS63 and MS64).
