SCARCE 1860-C, PCGS/CAC AU53
The 1860-C is numismatically significant as it is the final quarter eagle produced at the soon-to-close Charlotte mint. It is very scarce in AU grades with natural color and choice surfaces, and it is a rarity in Uncirculated.
This is only the second 1860-C I’ve offered for sale in any AU grade which was CAC approved. The coin appears to be very high end for an AU53 with very little actual wear noted and pleasing natural russet and light orange-gold on both sides. The detail is better than usual and the quality of the planchet is exceptional. It is really difficult to locate an 1860-C with this degree of eye appeal.
No PCGS/CAC example of this date in any grade has ever sold at auction, and there are just two APRs for NGC/CAC 1860-C quarter eagles: an AU55 which sold for $8,400 in March 2023, and an EF40 which brought a strong $7,200 in August 2021.
With just three CAC examples finer than this, it is unlikely that the advanced collector will have an opportunity to acquire a stickered 1860-C quarter eagle in the near future.
CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
