CHOICE AU 1856-O
The second-to-last New Orleans quarter eagle, the 1856-O is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with just five or six known.
This is an especially nice example with medium orange-gold color covering satiny surfaces. The strike is sharper than normal for this issue and the surfaces are uncommonly clean with just a few small ticks on the jaw of Liberty seen with the naked eye. I have handled most of the PCGS/CAC 1856-O in AU58 and this one is among the nicest.
There has never been a CAC approved AU58 1856-O sold at auction, and the last non-CAC PCGS 58 sold back in October 2010 for $4,025.
If you are waiting for an Uncirculated 1856-O quarter eagle which is both PCGS graded and CAC, you’ll have to be patient as there are just two and both are off the market in tightly-held collections.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with four finer.
