VERY RARE PCGS/CAC MS61 1856-C
The current PCGS population shows that six 1856-C quarter eagles have been graded MS61 (with three finer; all MS62), but what this doesn’t show is how low-end many of these specific coins are. Accurately graded Uncirculated pieces are exceedingly rare and the current example is the sole 1856-C to have been approved by CAC in any Mint State grade.
As with every known 1856-C, this piece show roughness on the obverse which is a result of improper annealing. For this reason, this issue must be graded by its luster and on this example there is more than enough present on the obverse to justify the assigned grade. In fact, the reverse is very choice and grades at least MS63—if not finer—on its own. Both sides show natural color with pleasing medium orange-gold which is the same as on the few relatively choice 1856-C quarter eagles which exist.
No PCGS MS61 example of this date has ever sold at auction. There are three APRs for PCGS MS62s, with the most recent occurring in January 2017 for $18,000.
This is a truly important coin which is not likely to be improved upon.
CAC has approved this one coin in any Uncirculated grade.
