NICE PCGS/CAC AU50 1855-C

Only 3,677 were struck, and from the standpoint of overall rarity, the 1855-C is a challenging issue within the Charlotte quarter eagle series. It seems to almost never be available at “affordable” price points (i.e. less than $7,500 in this case) and when it is, the coin is usually very ugly.

Not so with this high-end 1855-C. When I first saw it, I graded it solid AU53 and for an AU50 it is awfully meaty with loads of luster below natural light yellow-gold color. The strike shows the usual weakness on stars three through nine, with reasonably good detail at the centers, while there are no major marks seen on either side. An “eye appealing” 1855-C? What a concept!

No PCGS/CAC AU50 (or AU53) has ever sold at auction while a PCGS/CAC AU55 brought $7,200 as Heritage 12/2022: 4115. The last two non-CAC PCGS AU50s to sell each realized $4,320; one in January 2019 and one in August 2019.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 13 finer.
